Jacob Jordaens

Jacob Jordaens

Flemish painter. Born and died in Antwerp. In 1607, he was recorded in the painters' guild of his hometown as a pupil of Adam van Noort (1562-1641). He became independent in 1615, married Noort's eldest daughter the following year, and was elected head of the Antwerp painters' guild in 1621. He was strongly influenced by Rubens and is considered the third greatest Flemish painter of the 17th century after Van Dyck. His talent was displayed in many areas, including religious paintings, historical and mythological paintings, allegorical paintings, and decorative paintings, but his works were essentially based on the citizenry of the time, and many of his masterpieces are works depicting the daily lives of citizens. Even in his works based on mythology and classics, elements of the modern world and customs can often be seen. His representative works include "The Artist and His Family" (Prado Museum, Madrid), "The Peasant and Satyr" (National Gallery of Fine Arts, Kassel), and "Bread and the Sphinx" (Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Brussels).
