A26 long-distance aircraft - A26 long-distance aircraft
A long-distance airplane planned by the Asahi Shimbun Company as a project to commemorate the 2600th year of the Japanese Founding (1940). The "A" stands for the rising sun. Planning began in January 1940, with the University of Tokyo's Aeronautical Research Institute involved in research and design, and Tachikawa Aircraft Co., Ltd. in charge of production, and the first flight was successful on November 18, 1942. The plane was 15.3m long, 29.438m wide, and had two 1000-horsepower class engines. Its distinctive external shape was characterized by its extremely slender wings. The second of the two airplanes made took off from Fussa Airport in Tokyo on June 30, 1943 for a connecting flight to Germany, and went missing after travelling via Singapore to Germany on July 7.
