A small bamboo that can be used as a hedge or planted in a garden; it belongs to the grass family. Culms grow in clusters from horizontal rhizomes, reaching a height of 3m and a diameter of 2cm, with rather thick nodes. The name "kanchiku" (cold bamboo) means that bamboo shoots emerge during the coldest period of the lunar calendar. Bamboo shoots emerge in autumn and grow, and the culms branch out in early summer the following year. The bamboo bark reaches a length of 20cm and remains for about a year. Several branches emerge from each node. The leaves are lanceolate, about 10cm long, and hairless, with 3-4 leaves at the end of each branch. They sometimes bloom, and the spikelets are linear, 4-8cm long, purple, with sparse, alternate flowers about 1cm long. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
