...Since the end of the 19th century, it has been a modern industrial city and a commuter town for Amsterdam. It is also the central city of Zuid-Kennemerland, which includes the dune area in the west of the city, the reclaimed land of Lake Haarlem in the south, and the reclaimed land of the river IJ in the north. It developed at a bend in the Spaarne, which flows into the IJ, and after it was granted a city law in 1245, beer brewing, woolen textiles, shipbuilding, soap production, and bleaching industries developed.
