The oldest symphony orchestra still in existence in the United States. Founded in 1842 as the New York Philharmonic Society by American violinist Ureli Corelli Hill (c. 1802-1875), it absorbed the National Symphony Orchestra in 1921 and the City Symphony Orchestra in 1923, and merged with the New York Symphony Society in 1928 to become the New York Philharmonic. Many famous conductors, including Mengelberg, Toscanini, B. Walter, Mitropoulos, and Bernstein, served as principal conductors and music directors, improving the quality of the orchestra and increasing its reputation.
