Aufklärung (English spelling) Aufklarung

...the general term for an ideological movement that was widespread in Western Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries with the rise of the modern citizen class and was a driving force in the formation of civil society. The English name above, the German Aufklärung, and the French lumières all mean light or to illuminate with light. It is thought that the goal of this movement was to fully trust and appeal to the innate "reason" of humans as the "light of nature," and to work toward "human beings escaping from their own state of immaturity, for which they are indebted," as Kant put it, by each person daring to exercise their own power of reason, thereby realizing a community of rational and independent individuals.
