The Memorial of the Three Kingdoms

Japanese: 三国遺事 - さんごくいじ
The Memorial of the Three Kingdoms

This book records anecdotes from the three Korean kingdoms of Silla, Goguryeo, and Baekje. It was written by the Goryeo monk Il-yeon (1206-89) in his later years, with some additions made by his disciple Mu-ki. It has five volumes. The first volume starts with a chronology called the King's Calendar, and the next nine sections are Chronicles 1, 2, Hengbo, Pagodazo, Gihae, Shinju, Gantong, Biin, and Filial Piety. Most of the articles from the Hengbo section onwards are related to Buddhism. There are many different versions that are not found in the Samguk Sagi or that are different from it, making it a basic historical resource for research into ancient Korea. A facsimile of the Gyeongju edition published during the reign of Jungjong of the Yi dynasty (1506-44) is widely available.
