Also called a subduction zone. A belt-like region where the ocean floor lithosphere sinks obliquely beneath a continent or island arc. It occurs when one of the convergent boundaries of two plates is on the ocean floor. It was first discovered in 1928 by Kiyoo Wadati as a deep earthquake surface that slopes from the ocean trench downward toward the land, and in 1954 Hugo Benioff of the United States compiled examples from around the world, so it is also called the Wadati-Benioff zone or simply the Benioff zone.

沈み込み帯ともいう。海底リソスフェアが大陸または島弧の下へ斜めに沈み込んでいる帯状の地域。二つのプレートの収束境界のうち一方が海底の場合に起こる。海溝から陸の下へ傾いた深発地震面として，1928年に和達清夫によって発見されたのが始まりで，54年にアメリカのベニオフHugo Benioffによって世界各地の例がまとめられたので和達=ベニオフ帯Wadati‐Benioff zoneまたは単にベニオフ帯ともいう。
