This refers to a compound that does not follow the law of definite proportions. Also known as a bertholide compound or a nonstoichiometric compound. This refers to interstitial compounds and lattice defect compounds, such as oxides, sulfides, hydrides, carbides, and borides of transition metals, whose atomic ratios do not follow simple integer ratios. For example, PdH(/x) (x = 0-0.71), TiO(/x) (x = 1.90-2.00). Many of these compounds are important as semiconductors, ferroelectrics, solid catalysts, and magnetic materials. The oxides of high-temperature superconductors are also compounds of this type.
