1858‐1940 British metallurgist and industrialist. Born in Attercliffe, he studied at the University of Sheffield before taking over his father's foundry business. He set up a laboratory and began systematic research into iron alloys, inventing manganese steel in 1882 and silicon steel in 1899. He was also interested in the history of metallurgy, and analyzed alloys made by M. Faraday and James Stodart (made between 1818 and 1822) that were preserved at the Royal Institution, and published Faraday and Metallurgical Researches (1931).
