One of the methods of allocating irrigation water that has been used since the Kamakura and Muromachi periods to the present day. When water from a river, irrigation canal, or pond is drawn to several rice paddies, there are two methods: one where the time for drawing water is set, and one where water is distributed through certain facilities (water gauges at water division points, width and depth of canals, etc.). The regulations for the bansui system were not detailed, and water disputes continued throughout the ages.
