Aromatic compounds with electron-rich benzene rings are unlikely to undergo nucleophilic reactions except in certain cases. Conversely, the most common reaction is the aromatic electrophilic substitution reaction, in which an electrophilic reagent E ⁺ replaces a hydrogen atom on the benzene ring and H ⁺ is eliminated. Nitration, halogenation, sulfonation, and the Friedel-Crafts reaction of benzene are classified as such reactions.
