A Japanese scholar of the mid-Edo period. His first name was Tameaki. He was commonly known as Uhei, and later Shinsuke. He called himself Toshiyama. He was from Tanba Province (Kyoto Prefecture). He studied waka poetry under Nakanoin Michishige (1631-1710) and Confucianism under Ito Jinsai. He was invited by Tokugawa Mitsukuni in Mito along with his older brother Tamezane (1654-1717), and participated in the compilation of works such as Dai Nihonshi and Rigyo Ruiten as associates of the Shokokan. At Mitsukuni's command, he was taught by Keichu in Naniwa (Osaka Prefecture) and established a family of scholars of historical research. "Seven Treatises on Murasaki Shikibu" is a noteworthy work that serves as a pioneer in biographical research on Murasaki Shikibu, and her other works include "Thoughts on the Tale of Eiga," "Thoughts on the Tale of Utsubo," and the essay "Nenzan Kibun."
