...The phenomenon of language history is too complex to be resolved into one-or-the-other theory. Concepts developed in linguistic geography include "word radiation" (words radiate from cultural centers, and archaic words may remain in remote areas), "word travel" (words spread by crawling across the earth), "reversion" (changing a word form that is considered incorrect into one that is considered correct, often resulting in overcorrection), and "word therapy" (the application of a new means of distinction when homophones or other words arise and it becomes difficult to distinguish between words).
