One of the three periods that divide history into prehistoric, protohistoric, and historical periods. A translation of protohistoric times (English) and Frühgeschichte (German). When the history of a nation or a country is described based on the presence or absence of written historical materials, the period with abundant written historical materials is called the historical period or historical period, and the period that precedes history and has no written records is called the prehistoric period. The transitional period between the prehistoric and historical periods is called the protohistoric period. In other words, it is a period when documents and traditions exist in fragments, and the state of a nation or a country can be known to some extent from relics and ruins. Therefore, since the period is divided by the type and amount of materials, there is a debate as to where the transitional period between the protohistoric and historical periods should be. In Japan, there are theories that the protohistoric period is the Kofun period, and theories that it is from the Kofun period to before the reign of Empress Suiko.
