The first governor of the Portuguese colony of Brazil, in office from 1549 to 1553. Even after the Capitania system was established in 1532, the tyrannical behavior of Portuguese settlers led the Indians to cooperate with the French, and conflicts between the Capitania's head Donatálio and the settlers continued. Therefore, King John III of Portugal decided to send his own representative to the colony. Sousa, who had a successful career as a soldier and administrator in Africa and India, was selected, and when he took up his post, he arrived on six ships with about 1,000 people, including a chief treasurer, a chief magistrate, civil servants, soldiers, carpenters, masons, craftsmen, and settlers, to assist him.

ポルトガルのブラジル植民地の初代総督。在任1549‐53年。1532年にカピタニア制が施行された後も，ポルトガル人入植者の横暴な行為のために，インディオがフランス人に協力するようになり，またカピタニアの責任者ドナタリオと入植者の間の紛争も絶えなかったので，ポルトガル王ジョアン3世は，植民地に自らの代表を派遣することにした。アフリカとインドで軍人，行政官として実績をあげていたソウザが選ばれたが，彼の着任の際には，6隻の船に彼を補佐する首席財務官，首席判事，官吏，兵士，大工，石工，職人，入植者など約1000人が同乗して到着した。
