…The religion of the Rig Veda is polytheistic, and most of the gods are natural deities, but its so-called philosophical hymns assume some kind of world principle and attempt to explain the origins of the diverse phenomena of the world, and as a whole have a strong tendency toward monism. This tendency is inherited by the other three Vedic Samhitas (main collections), the Brahmanas (ritual books), and the Āraṇyakas (forest books), but reaches its apex in the Upanishads.
