Singin' in the Rain

American film. Directed by Gene Kelly (1912-1996) and Stanley Donen (1924-2019). Produced in 1952. A work from the golden age of musical films led by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), this is a masterpiece that shows the maturity of the genre. The story of the romance between star actor Don (Gene Kelly) and chorus girl Cathy (Debbie Reynolds, 1932-2016), who has a crush on him, is embedded in the film history plot of the birth of the musical genre with the arrival of the talkie era. The storyline is compressed, with many dance scenes, and the camera moves as if it were choreographed like the dancers, so the dance scenes themselves are the driving force that moves the story forward. Kelly dances around the streetlights while singing in the pouring rain, splashing water from puddles. The camera moves to capture this dynamic dance using crane shots (shots filmed using a gigantic crane-like device) and swiveling movements. By skillfully using "camera movement," the film makes full use of the information medium of film, something that is not possible on stage, and breaks down the barriers of the existing musical genre. As a film adaptation of a 1960s Broadway musical, it is a groundbreaking work that can be seen as a stepping stone to the next generation of musical film style. Released in Japan in 1953 (Showa 28).

アメリカ映画。監督ジーン・ケリーGene Kelly（1912―1996）、スタンリー・ドーネンStanley Donen（1924―2019）。1952年作品。メトロ・ゴールドウィン・メイヤー社（MGM）が牽引(けんいん)したミュージカル映画黄金期の作品で、このジャンルの成熟度がみてとれる秀作。スター俳優ドン（ジーン・ケリー）と彼に好意を寄せるコーラスガールのキャシー（デビー・レイノルズDebbie Reynolds、1932―2016）とのロマンスの物語のなかに、トーキー時代の到来によるミュージカルジャンルの誕生という映画史的プロットが盛り込まれている。物語の筋は圧縮され、ダンスシーンの比率が多く、ダンサーと同じようにカメラも振り付けられたかのように動くことで、ダンスシーン自体が物語を進める推進力となっている。ケリーは土砂降りの雨のなかで、歌いながら街灯の周りを回り、水たまりの水をはねあげ踊る。その躍動感あふれるダンスをクレーンショット（巨大なアームに似たクレーン装置を使って撮影したショット）や、旋回運動などを交えてカメラもまた移動していく。「カメラの動き」を巧みに使うことで、舞台ではなしえない、映画という情報媒体を存分に生かし、ミュージカルという既存のジャンル様式の壁を一枚破った作品。1960年代のブロードウェー・ミュージカルの映画化という、次世代のミュージカル映画スタイルへの布石ともいえる画期的作品。1953年（昭和28）日本公開。
