A general term for the genus Alpinia (Zingiberaceae). More than 250 species of perennial herbs are distributed mainly in the Asian tropics. In Japan, the species Alpinia serrata, Alpinia serrata, and Alpinia serrata grow wild. They generally have a large plant shape like ginger. Species with glossy oblong-lanceolate leaves and beautiful flowers are used as ornamental plants. In Japan, Alpinia serrata ( A.zerumbet `Variegata') is the most commonly cultivated ornamental plant, and Alpinia serrata is also used as "cut leaves" for ikebana. Red ginger A.purpurata , with its beautiful, brightly colored capsules, has been imported as cut flowers from Hawaii and other places in recent years. Many species have medicinal properties, and the rhizomes and seeds of some species are used as herbal medicines. In warm areas such as Okinawa, they are cultivated outdoors, but are generally grown in pots or greenhouses. They are planted in well-drained soil and kept at 8-10°C or higher in winter. Keep out of direct sunlight as the leaves are prone to burn.

ショウガ科アルピニア (ハナミョウガ) 属の総称。アジアの熱帯を中心に 250種以上が分布する多年草。日本にはクマタケランやアオノクマタケラン，ハナミョウガなどが自生する。一般にショウガを大型にしたような草姿をもつ。長楕円状披針形のつやのある葉とともに，花の美しい種類が，観賞植物として利用される。日本ではキフゲットウ A.zerumbet　`Variegata'が観葉植物として最もよく栽培され，ゲットウも生け花用の「切り葉」として利用される。また，鮮かに色づく包が美しいレッドジンジャー A.purpurataは近年ハワイなどから切り花として輸入されている。なお，薬効のある種類も多く，一部の種の根茎や種子が，漢方薬として用いられている。沖縄などの暖地では露地栽培もされるが，一般には鉢植えまたは温室内で育てる。水はけのよい用土に植え，冬は8～10℃以上に保つ。葉焼けを起しやすいため，直射日光に当てないように管理する。
