In order to maintain the right of the priesthood that his family had held, he became Bishop of Luçon in 1607. In 1614 he represented the priesthood at the Three Estates General, and was recognized by Marie de Medicis, regent and mother of King Louis XIII, and entered the political world. When the king began to rule personally in 1617 and a dispute arose between him and the regent, he mediated a reconciliation between the two, thereby strengthening his political influence.
