A disease of horses. Symptoms include sudden enteritis, gas filling the intestines, increased heart rate, difficulty breathing, and abdominal pain, but the cause is unclear and the disease does not respond to treatment, hence the name. Mortality is high, with death occurring within 24 hours of onset. The cause is thought to be endotoxemia caused by bacterial toxins, a type of shock. Treatment should aim to alleviate shock and cure dehydration. [Motoyoshi Shigekazu] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
