An evergreen fern of the family Lycopodium (illustration) that grows in shady areas of mountain forests. The sporophyll and vegetative leaves are clearly distinguishable, and the nearly upright sporophyll can reach a height of 1m. The rhizome is erect and the leaves grow in clusters. There are no scales or hairs anywhere on the plant. The leaves are dimorphic. The vegetative leaves are simple pinnate, the veins are forked, and they do not form a net. The pinnae of the sporophyll are narrow, and sporangia are attached along the veins on the underside, with the margins of the pinna everted to cover them like an envelope. It is found in the Kanto and Hokuriku regions, westward to Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, and is distributed on Jeju Island and in China (provinces along the Yangtze River).
