1377‐1447 The third monarch of the Timurid dynasty. Reigned 1409-47. Fourth son of Timur. After Timur's death, he succeeded in reuniting the empire, which was on the verge of fragmentation. He moved the capital to his own base of Herat, and appointed his eldest son Ulugh Beg as the governor of Samarkand, thus establishing a family-run system of control over the empire. He also adopted a peaceful diplomatic policy, exchanging envoys with the Ming dynasty, and protecting and encouraging the arts and sciences, bringing the Timurid dynasty to its peak.
