...This song was written in the 1820s to praise the heroic deeds of a bandit called Klephtis, who turned the Turks against his rulers, during the War of Liberation. It features a beatless rhythm and a melismatic style in which each syllable is stretched out to create a rise and fall. There are many other traditional folk song forms, including the wedding procession song patinada, but the wailing song called mirolóyia is sung by women for the dead and is considered to be one of the oldest traditions. In Thrace and the Aegean islands near Turkey, a Turkish-style lamentative vocal music (with Greek lyrics) called amané has been handed down. ...
