Nagashima
Formerly a town in the eastern part of Kuwana City, in northern Mie Prefecture. Located on the river delta between the Nagara River and the Kiso River, facing Ise Bay. Nagashima Village was incorporated as a town in 1954, merged with Kusu Village in 1955, and incorporated Isoshima Village in 1956. In 2004, it merged with Kuwana City and Tado Town to form Kuwana City. The name of the area comes from a place name that has existed since the Middle Ages. It is the site of the Nagashima Rebellion by followers of Ganshoji Temple in 1570. Known as a ring settlement, it was once divided into many ring settlements, but was gradually integrated through flood control and reclamation, and the entire area became a single ring settlement after the Ise Bay Typhoon (1959). Rice and pears are cultivated, but in 1963, a high-quality hot spring was discovered and developed on the southern end of the bay, and it has become a tourist destination with Nagashima Hot Springs and a comprehensive leisure land. The entire area belongs to Suigo Prefectural Natural Park.
