[Died] October 16, 1982. Montreal, Canada. Austrian-born Canadian endocrinologist. Full name Hans Hugo Bruno Selye. Proponent of stress theory. Studied medicine at the Universities of Paris and Rome, and qualified as a physician at the German University in Prague, Czechoslovakia, in 1929. In 1931, he went to the United States as a Rockefeller researcher and entered Johns Hopkins University, and the following year transferred to McGill University in Canada. From 1945 to 1976, he was professor and director of the Institute of Experimental Medicine at the University of Montreal, and in 1976 he became director of the International Stress Institute. In 1936, he proposed the stress theory, which states that when a living body is exposed to non-specific stimuli (stressors) such as trauma, poisoning, cold, and infection, a reaction occurs centered on the anterior pituitary gland and adrenal system, regardless of the type of stimulus (→ General Adaptation Syndrome). He has written over 1,200 books, including The Stress of Life, a book aimed at the general public.

オーストリア生まれのカナダの内分泌学者。フルネーム Hans Hugo Bruno Selye。ストレス理論の提唱者。パリ大学およびローマ大学で医学を学び，1929年，チェコスロバキアのプラハにあるドイツ大学で医師資格を得た。1931年ロックフェラー研究員としてアメリカ合衆国に渡り，ジョンズ・ホプキンズ大学に入り，翌 1932年カナダのマギル大学に転じた。1945～76年，モントリオール大学の教授兼実験医学研究所所長，1976年から国際ストレス研究所所長となる。1936年に生体が外傷，中毒，寒冷，感染症などの非特異的刺激（ストレッサー）を受けると，その刺激の種類に関係なく，下垂体前葉，副腎系を中心とした反応が起こるというストレス理論を提唱した（→汎適応症候群）。著作は 1200をこえるが，一般向け著書としては『現代生活とストレス』The Stress of Lifeがある。
