Mirror of the Fields

Japanese:
Mirror of the Fields
A Kamakura period treatise on poetry. There are various theories about the author, including Minamoto Arifusa and a Tendai monk (name unknown). It was completed in September 1295 (Einin 3). It has the same structure as the "Okagami" and other works, in that it introduces stories the author heard from the resident monks during a pilgrimage to Shoshazan (Engyo-ji Temple in Harima). It consists of two volumes, the first of which explains a theory of poetry that values calm and beauty in the style of the Nijo school, and criticizes the Kyogoku school, especially Tamekane, while the second volume is mainly a discussion of religion, criticizing the Zen and Jodo sects. It is valuable as an anti-Kyogoku school treatise on poetry and as a source for the history of Buddhist thought. [Akase Tomoko]
