Ube [city] - Ube

Japanese: 宇部[市] - うべ

Located in the western part of Yamaguchi Prefecture, facing the Suo-Nada Sea, this city was incorporated in 1921. After the Meiji period, coal mining in the Ube coalfields began in earnest, and the town rapidly developed as a mining town. Regional development was promoted through the Ube-style union organization and joint council, and a series of coal combinat projects for metals, steel, cement, soda, and ammonium sulfate were formed. Ube Port was developed using waste soil from coal mines for landfill, and development of the undersea coalfields also progressed. In 1967, all coal mines were closed, and redevelopment was planned with the introduction of the petrochemical industry instead. In recent years, construction of a technopolis centered on advanced technology industries has been underway in the hilly area to the north. The Sanyo Main Line, Ube Line, and Onoda Line run through the town, and it is home to Yamaguchi-Ube Airport, the Faculty of Engineering, and the Faculty of Medicine of Yamaguchi University. In November 2004, Kusunoki Town, Asa County, was incorporated. Area: 286.65 km ² . 173,772 people (2010).

山口県西部，周防灘(すおうなだ)に臨む市。1921年市制。明治以後宇部炭田の採炭が本格化，炭鉱町として急速に発展した。宇部式組合組織，共同議会などを中心に地域開発が進められ，金属，鉄鋼，セメント，ソーダ，硫安など一連の石炭コンビナートの形成，炭坑の廃土を埋立に利用した宇部港の整備が行われ，海底炭田の開発も進んだ。1967年全炭坑が閉山，代わって石油化学工業の導入による再発展が計られた。近年は北部の丘陵地帯に先端技術産業を中心としたテクノポリスの建設が進められている。山陽本線，宇部線，小野田線が通じ，山口宇部空港，山口大学工学部・医学部がある。2004年11月厚狭郡楠町を編入。286.65km²。17万3772人（2010）。
