Masachika Asukai
Year of death: Entoku 2.12.22 (1491.1.31)
Year of birth: 1417
A nobleman in the late Muromachi period. His father was Gon Chunagon Masayo. In 1448, he was promoted to the rank of non-councillor, Jushi-sanmi, and in 1466, he was promoted to Gon Dainagon. In 1473, he became a monk and took the Buddhist name Eiga. The Asukai family had been known for generations as a family of waka poetry and kemari, and Masachika was taught by his father from an early age and showed talent in waka poetry. In 1465, Emperor Go-Tsuchimikado ordered him to compile an imperial anthology, but the Onin War brought the project to a halt. He taught waka poetry and kemari to the Muromachi Shogunate's Ashikaga Yoshimasa and Yoshihisa, and was active at the center of the poetry world in the Bunmei and Chokyo periods as a waka instructor to nobles and local daimyo. He was also skilled in calligraphy, and his style was called the Eiga school. His family anthology includes the Asukai Masachika Collection. <References> Inoue Muneo, "Study on the History of the Medieval Poetry World - The Muromachi Period"
