〘名〙① 燕(つばめ)の尾。② 冠に付属する纓(えい)の一種。纓尻(えじり)が円形である纓をいう。中世以来、加冠の際に用いる。※江家次第(1111頃)二〇「次加冠立レ座進入、冠者額結二尾一」③ (②を誤用して) 纓(えい)をいう。※咄本・私可多咄(1671)三「昔、法頂のかづく燕尾(エンビ)といふ物をみて、あれはゑぼしといふかととふ者有」④ 鏃(やじり)の形状による名称で、雁股(かりまた)の鏃の一種。⑤ 掛軸の表装で、上部の中央に並べて垂らした二条の細長い布。⑥ =えんびぼう(燕尾帽)〔日葡辞書(1603‐04)〕⑦ 南画で、竹の葉の描き方の一法をいう。竹の葉が二枚出ている様のうち、燕の尾に似た方のもの。
