Nittetsu Mining's limestone mine is located in the south of Niyodogawa Town in the northwest of Kochi Prefecture. It is located in a corner of the Shikoku mountain range, and at an altitude of 1,459m, it is the highest open-cut mine in Japan. It consists of limestone, diabase tuff, quartzite, and slate from the Chichibu Paleozoic Formation, and limestone is exposed throughout the entire mining area. It has a grade (calcium oxide) of over 55%, and reserves of approximately 1.5 billion tons. Development began in April 1969, and operations began in May 1971 with a target annual production of 6 million tons. The mine is extracted using the step mining method, and the raw ore is crushed at the mine base and transported to the shipping base at Susaki Port on a long-distance conveyor belt spanning 23km.
