This butterfly belongs to the order Lepidoptera and family Pieridae of the class Insecta. It is widely distributed from Sakhalin, the northern part of the Korean Peninsula, and northern China to Europe, and in Japan it is found only in Hokkaido. Its wingspan is 60-75 mm. The surface of the wings is white, with pale black bases, veins, and outer edges. Females have fewer white scales, and older female wings become almost translucent. Adults emerge once a year, appearing from mid-June to mid-July on the plains and from early July to early August in the mountains. The larvae feed on the leaves of beadle, Japanese quince, hawthorn, pear, apple, and various cherry trees, and lay eggs on the undersides of the leaves of the host plants. The larvae build communal nests and overwinter in groups.
