Ezo cicada - Ezozemi

It is an insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadidae. It is found throughout Japan, the Korean peninsula, and China. It is a large cicada with a body length of 60 to 65 mm from the wing tip. Its body is black with reddish brown and yellow markings, but the color varies depending on the individual. Its wings are transparent and its wing veins are brown. The male's abdominal valve is longer than it is wide. It inhabits plains and low mountainous areas in Hokkaido and the Tohoku region, but in other areas it inhabits mountainous areas above 600 meters above sea level. Adults appear from mid-July to mid-September, chirping continuously in pine and cedar forests. There are four other species of the Ezo cicada genus known to be found in Japan. The red Gleb Cicada T. flammatus is similar to the Gleb Cicada, but its body color is more reddish, and it only lives in a localized area. The small Gleb Cicada T. bihamatus is slightly smaller, with a body length of 34 to 38 mm. It is found in the mountains of Hokkaido, Honshu, and Shikoku, as well as in Karafuto (Sakhalin) and the southern Kuril Islands. The Kyushu Ezo Cicada T. kyushyuensis is found in Honshu (Hiroshima Prefecture), Shikoku, and Kyushu, but its distribution does not overlap with that of the Koezo Cicada. The Yakushima Ezo Cicada T. esakii is found only in the highlands of Yakushima.

昆虫綱半翅目(はんしもく)セミ科に属する昆虫。日本全土、朝鮮半島、中国に分布。体長は翅端(したん)まで60～65ミリメートルの大形のセミである。体は黒色の地に、赤褐色と黄色の斑紋(はんもん)をもつが、個体により色彩に変異がある。はねは透明で、翅脈は褐色。雄の腹弁は幅より長い。北海道や東北地方では平地から低山地にかけて生息するが、そのほかの地域では標高600メートル以上の山地にすむ。成虫は7月中旬から9月中旬まで出現し、マツやスギ林で、ギーギーと連続して鳴く。日本産のエゾゼミ属はほかに4種が知られている。アカエゾゼミT. flammatusはエゾゼミに似るが体色は赤みが強く、生息地は局所的である。コエゾゼミT. bihamatusは体長34～38ミリメートルでやや小形。北海道、本州、四国の山地および樺太(からふと)（サハリン）、南千島に分布する。キュウシュウエゾゼミT. kyushyuensisは本州（広島県）、四国、九州に分布するが、コエゾゼミと分布が重ならない。ヤクシマエゾゼミT. esakiiは屋久島(やくしま)の高地にのみ分布する。
