...The Lombards, who had been migrating to the lower Elbe valley since the end of the 1st century BC, began to move south in the early 5th century. During their long wanderings, they gained other tribes and peoples and entered Pannonia in the early 6th century, where they established a semi-nomadic equestrian state. In 552, a group of them appeared in the Po Valley in northern Italy in cooperation with Narses as an ally of the Byzantine Empire (Phoedus). King Alboino (reigned 561-572), who was threatened by the arrival of the Avars, broke through the Friuli border line (Limes) in 568 with the entire Lombard army, including the Gepids, Bulgars, and remnants of the Sarmatians, as well as some other Germanic tribes, and occupied the Po Valley and Milan the following year in 569.
