It can be distinguished from the similar freshwater alga Thorea okadai Yamada, which is also a national natural monument (Kikuchi River, Kumamoto Prefecture, Kawauchi River, Kagoshima Prefecture), by the fact that its assimilation threads are almost completely unbranched. …
