A city in southern Hungary. It straddles the Tisza River, where the Maros River joins nearby. It is said to have been a residential center of the Huns in the 4th and 5th centuries, and flourished as a fortress city and a commercial center during the Árpád dynasty (890-1301). It was destroyed by invasions by the Mongol army (13th century) and the Ottoman Empire army (15th century), but in the 19th century it flourished as a distribution center for rock salt and timber transported by boat from Transylvania on the Maros River, as well as agricultural products from the fertile surrounding Banat region. In 1920, Transylvania and the southern Banat were annexed to Romania and the former Yugoslavia, and Szeged fell into decline for a time, but has since been rebuilt as an educational center. There are many cultural facilities such as universities and museums. Population: 176,135 (1991 estimate).
