The Book of Ezekiel

It is one of the three major prophetic books in the Old Testament, along with Isaiah and Jeremiah. It consists of 48 chapters, and includes prophecies from when Ezekiel began his prophetic work in Babylon in 593 BC to when Neo-Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar II failed to occupy Tyre in Phoenicia in 571 BC. Ezekiel spoke of God's judgment to destroy the capital Jerusalem and the downfall of the Kingdom of Judah as punishment for idolatry, but after the prophecy was fulfilled with the fall of Jerusalem in 587 BC, he made a complete turn and began to prophesy about restoration. Chapters 40 to 48 in particular describe a vision of the restoration of Israel through the restoration of temple worship in Jerusalem and the observance of the Law.

「イザヤ書」「エレミヤ書」と並ぶ『旧約聖書』の三大預言書の一つ。全体は48章で、紀元前593年バビロンでエゼキエルが預言活動を始めたときから、前571年新バビロニア王ネブカドネザル2世がフェニキアのツロ占領に失敗したときまでの預言を集めている。エゼキエルは、偶像礼拝などの報いとして、首都エルサレムの破壊とユダ王国の破滅という神の審判を語り、前587年エルサレム陥落で預言が実現すると、以後は一転して回復の預言を語った。とくに40～48章では、エルサレムの神殿礼拝の復興と律法の遵守によるイスラエル回復の幻を述べている。
