Morning Glory Jellyfish - Morning Glory Jellyfish

This jellyfish belongs to the phylum Coelenterata, class Scyphomedusa, order Cruciformes, and family Pseudomedusae. Its basic form is medusa-like, but at first glance it resembles a polyp, and it lives attached to seaweed such as Sargassum or seagrass such as Sargassum by a short stalk. Its cap is 1-2 cm high and shaped like an open morning glory flower, with eight arms around the edge of the cap and numerous small tentacles at the tips of the arms. A balance organ can be seen between the arms, and a cross-shaped mouth is located in the center of the cap. It is found in summer in shallow waters such as Hokkaido, central Honshu, and the Seto Inland Sea. It is also found on the coasts of North America and Europe.

腔腸(こうちょう)動物門ハチクラゲ綱十文字クラゲ目アサガオクラゲ科に属するクラゲ。形態は基本的にはクラゲ形であるが、一見ポリプ形に似ており、ホンダワラなどの海藻やスガモなどの海草の上に短い柄で付着して生活している。傘は高さ1～2センチメートル、アサガオの花が開いたような形をしており、その傘の縁(ふち)には8個の腕がみられ、腕の先端には多数の小触手群がある。腕と腕との中間には平衡器がみられ、傘の中央には十字形の口がある。北海道、本州中部、瀬戸内海などの浅海に夏季にみられる。北アメリカやヨーロッパの沿岸にも産する。
