Vaasa (English spelling)
The capital of Vaasa County in southwestern Finland. A port city in the central Gulf of Bothnia. About half of the population speaks Swedish. The port handles the shipping of timber and wood products, and has regular ships to Sweden. The main industries are lumber, hosiery, cotton weaving, flour milling, bread, sugar refining, soap, and automobile manufacturing. Founded in 1606, the city moved about 8 km closer to the coast after a fire in 1852, and was called Nikolainkaupunki until 1917. During the Finnish War of Independence in 1818, it was the capital of White Finland. Population 53,738 (1992 estimate).
