[Born] January 17, 1734 Berny [Died] February 16, 1829. Paris. A composer and educator who was born in Belgium and was active in France. He loved music from an early age, and at the age of 17, he went to Paris relying on J. Rameau. There, he conducted the orchestra of the La Pouprinière family, who were Rameau's patrons, and released the first symphony in France (1754) and various chamber music pieces, which were well received. He then became musical director for the Conti family, and won fame by releasing a series of sacred music and operas. He was instrumental in founding the Concerts for Connoisseurs, re-establishing the Concert Spirituel, and founding the Paris Conservatoire in 1795. While teaching composition, he wrote books such as Solfège and Singing at the Conservatoire.
