al-Aḥmar, al-Baḥr (English spelling) alAhmar alBahr

...A long, narrow sea between the African continent and the Arabian Peninsula. It is said to have been named the Red Sea because the blue-green algae Trichodesmium sometimes grows so much that the seawater turns red. In Arabic, it is called al-Baḥr al-Aḥmar (Red Sea). It is about 1,900 km long, stretching northwestward, and its maximum width is only about 300 km, but the center is deep, with some places exceeding 2,000 m deep. Geologically, it is part of the Great African Rift Valley in the south and the Jordan Valley, where the Dead Sea is located, in the north, and is a rift that formed when the Arabian Peninsula separated from the African continent.
