Fan-shaped Lotus Sutra booklet - Senmen Hokekyo Sashi
Created in the mid-12th century. This decorated sutra, handed down from Shitennoji Temple in Osaka, was made by folding fan paper (→ fan paintings) with genre paintings and bird and flower paintings in half and pasting the backs together to make a booklet, with sutras written on both sides. It is made up of 10 volumes consisting of 8 volumes of the Lotus Sutra, the Contemplation Sutra, and the Muryogikyo, and each volume has a picture of one of the Ten Rakshasas women dressed as ladies-in-waiting on the cover. It is thought that a total of 115 fan sheets were originally used, but currently only 59 sheets for 6 volumes and 5 covers remain, and some have escaped from the temple. It is significant as a large collection of secular paintings from the late Heian period. It is in the possession of Shitennoji Temple and Tokyo National Museum (both national treasures), as well as other collections.
