C 13 H 9 N (179.22). It is found in small amounts in anthracene oil obtained from coal tar. It is obtained by heating diphenylamine and formic acid with zinc chloride, or by treating diphenylamine-2-carboxylic acid with sulfuric acid or phosphoryl chloride, followed by reduction. Colorless needle-like crystals. Melting point 109-110 °C, boiling point 346 °C. p K a 5.6 (20 °C). It begins to sublime at 100 °C. It can be steam distilled. It is slightly soluble in hot water and alkaline. It is easily soluble in alcohols, ethers, and hydrocarbons. Dilute solutions give purple fluorescence, but the yellow salt obtained from acridine and acid gives green fluorescence. It reacts with alkyl or aryl halides to form acridinium salts. It dimerizes when exposed to light. It does not change when treated with sulfuric acid or potassium hydroxide. It is oxidized with potassium dichromate to give acridone. When reduced with a nickel catalyst, it becomes acridan (9,10-dihydroacridine). It is used as a raw material for synthetic dyes and fungicides (tripaflavin) and as a metal analysis reagent. It is highly irritating to the skin and mucous membranes. [CAS 260-94-6] Source: Morikita Publishing "Chemical Dictionary (2nd Edition)" Information about the Chemical Dictionary 2nd Edition |
