A temple located in Nara City. It is also written as Chosho-ji. Prince Takaoka (who became a monk and took the Buddhist name Shinnyo) of Emperor Heizei founded the temple in 835 (Jowa 2) on the site of the former Yamamomo Palace. At the end of the 10th century, Seikai of Kofuku-ji Temple lived here, initiating the seven-day Great Nembutsu (Chosho-ji Great Nembutsu) and painting a mandala of the Pure Land. This is called the Seikai Mandala and is counted as one of the three Pure Land mandalas in Japan. The temple fell into decline due to wars in the Middle Ages, and by the early Edo period only one building remained. Ryuko tried to restore it, but it was eventually abandoned.
