There are two types of instruments called cornets: (1) cornet (English) Kornett (German) cornet à pistons (French) cornetta (Italian) A brass instrument of the horn family. The word "cornet" is derived from "corno," meaning horn, with the suffix indicating its small size. It has a shape similar to a trumpet and the same range, but the conical tube accounts for a larger proportion of the instrument, producing a softer sound with fewer overtones. It was created in the 19th century by attaching a valve mechanism to the post horn, which was used to signal the arrival and departure of mail coaches, and at one time it surpassed the trumpet. The post horn is a smaller version of the medieval hunting horn. (2)cornett (English) Zink (German) cornet à bouquin (French) cornetto (Italian) A wind instrument also called a tzink. A Persian instrument with several finger holes drilled into an animal's horn was introduced to Europe around the 10th century and began to be made from wood or ivory. It was used until the 19th century, but especially in the Renaissance and Baroque periods (15th to 18th centuries), its soft tone was used extensively in church music, mainly as an accompaniment to singing. コルネットとよばれる楽器には次の2種類がある。 (1)cornet(英語) Kornett(ドイツ語) cornet à pistons(フランス語) cornetta(イタリア語) ホルン系の金管楽器。「コルネット」の語は、ホルンを意味するコルノcornoに、小ささを示す語尾をつけたもの。トランペットに似た形で音域も同じであるが、トランペットに比べて円錐(えんすい)管の占める割合が大きく、倍音が少ない柔らかな音が出る。19世紀に郵便馬車の発着の合図に使われていたポストホルンにバルブ装置をつけてつくられ、一時はトランペットをしのぐ勢いであった。ポストホルンは中世の狩猟用ホルンを小形にしたものである。 (2)cornett(英語) Zink(ドイツ語) cornet à bouquin(フランス語) cornetto(イタリア語) ツィンクともよばれる管楽器。
