…(3) Interlude music, usually instrumental, played between the acts of a play or opera. Since the second half of the 17th century, it has also been called intermezzo, act-tune, or entr'acte. Examples of interludes include Schubert's Rosamunde and Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream. These are often performed alone.
