A large sailing ship used throughout Europe from the 14th to 16th centuries. It is rigged taking advantage of the advantages of Northern European square (square) sails and Southern European vertical (triangular) sails, and the hull is built using the Southern European laminated construction. The ratio of the ship's width, keel length, and main deck length is typically 1:2:3, it is stocky, and has tall towers at the bow and stern. Said to have originated in Southern Europe, it was used extensively in Spain and Portugal during the Age of Discovery, and also arrived in Japan. Nao ship (nao) is another name for carrack, and the Santa Maria, known as the ship of C. Columbus, was also called a nao. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
