Arendt

Japanese: アレント
Arendt
A political thinker and philosopher. A Jew born in Germany, she studied under Heidegger and Jaspers. In 1933, she fled Nazi persecution and emigrated to France, and in 1942 she defected to the United States and became a naturalized citizen. Her major work, The Origins of Totalitarianism (1951), is a classic that thoroughly explains the structure of two totalitarian movements of the 20th century, Nazism and Soviet Communism, centering on the historical development of anti-Semitism from the establishment of modern nation-states to Nazi rule. Her other works include The Human Condition, On Violence, On Revolution, and Eichmann in Jerusalem. She has consistently pointed out that the modern crisis is rooted in the loss of the "public sphere." Her excellent collection of essays, Men in Dark Times, discusses people and works such as Benjamin, Dinesen, and Brecht, showing that Arendt was a thinker who was not limited to a particular academic field. Her complex lifelong relationship with Heidegger and her friendships with Jaspers and Mary McCarthy are also noteworthy.
