Noumi Island

Japanese: 能美島 - のうみじま
Noumi Island

An island in Hiroshima Bay in the southwest of Hiroshima Prefecture. The eastern part is connected to Eta Island by the isthmus of Hitonose, and the southeastern part is connected to Kurahashi Island across the Hayase Strait by the Hayase Ohashi Bridge. The island is long and narrow from northwest to southeast, with a narrow center, and the northern part is called Nishi Nomi Island and the southern part is called Higashi Nomi Island.

Pottery from the Yayoi and Kofun periods has been excavated from the island, and in the late Heian period it was the Nomi Sho. Administratively, the island was made up of three towns, Okimi, Nomi, and Ogaki, all of Saeki County, but in 2004, the three towns merged with Etajima Town, Aki County, to form Etajima City. Many people commute to work or study in Hiroshima and Kure. The island's hilly terrain is cultivated in terraces, and in addition to mandarin oranges, flowers and vegetables are grown, inshore fishing, and oyster and seaweed farming is carried out. Together with the adjacent Etajima, the island has an area of 91.44 square kilometers, with a population of 27,031 (2010).
