Kakujo - Kakujo

Japanese: 覚盛 - かくじょう
Kakujo - Kakujo

A monk of the Kamakura period. He promoted the idea of vinaya (principle) within the old Kamakura Buddhism. His pen name was Gakuritsu. He was from Yamato (Nara Prefecture). In 1212 (Kenryaku 2), Gedatsu Shonin (Jokei) selected 20 monks to revive vinaya, and he was one of them. He studied Kegon under Myoe and Vinaya under Kainyo (date of birth and death unknown), and in 1236 (Kasei 2), he took the precepts of the Mahayana by self-vow in front of the Buddha in the Great Buddha Hall of Todaiji Temple together with Eison and others. During the Ninji era (1240-1243), he bestowed the Bodhisattva precepts on Emperor Shijo and resided at Toshodaiji Temple by imperial order. Emperor Godaigo posthumously gave him the title of Bodhisattva of Great Compassion. Kakusho was said to be the reincarnation of Ganjin, and made great contributions to the revival of the Vinaya, and had many disciples.
